Askon Demir continues to progress in the area of gender equality within the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals. In this context, the company has committed, at the highest level, to adhere to the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs), established to promote gender equality in business, with a pledge signed by the Chairman of the Board and General Manager, Mr. Okan Konyalıoğlu.
Entering its 91st year in the steel industry, Askon Demir is advancing as a global player, aligned with its services, production capacity, export goals, and sustainable, profitable growth targets. As part of its strategy for change and growth based on its core values, Askon Demir has previously signed the "10 Principles of the UN Global Compact," addressing fundamental business responsibilities related to human rights, labor standards, the environment, and the fight against corruption. Now, the company has also joined the signatories of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), developed in partnership with the UN Global Compact, UN Women, and the Inter-American Investment Corporation.
Commenting on the matter, Konyalıoğlu stated, "As Askon Demir, we care about women's stronger participation in both society and business life. We shape our investments and growth strategies in this direction and pledge to comply with these globally binding principles to ensure gender-based equality of opportunity at the highest level."
About WEPs
The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) is a joint initiative of UN Women and the UN Global Compact. UN Women, a leading organization in gender equality, combines decades of experience with the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest citizen initiative, in this collaborative effort.
UN Women and the UN Global Compact hope that the WEPs serve as a "gender lens" and inspire individuals and organizations striving to ensure women's presence at every level of the economic sphere, thereby strengthening work in this area.
